January 2021 Blog Circle | Framing

New year, new project! This year instead of doing one roll on one day for our blog circle, we decided to do themes. The January theme is FRAMING, which I decided to interpret as anything surrounding my subject in a secondary way to let my subject take center stage. It did push me to do a few new things including being very literal by using a mirror to frame my subject a few times, and trying to figure out how to use my new baby grand piano in an interesting way, but I also fell back into some old stand-by compositions like using the hill and the tree to create a sort of open-sided frame. I was also trying out my new Rolleiflex 2.8F and the square composition combined with framing was QUITE the challenge! I shot roll on Portra 800 at 400 +1, and MAN has it been dark, so the shutter speed has been less than ideal. But I’m getting better at keeping that Rollei steady!

NOT to leave out other themes I’m working on this month, such as indoor light and self portraits, you’ll see a couple of those in here as well. I’m all about combining whenever I possibly can. So look for the teeeeeeeeny tiny framed self portrait in one of my shots. I promise, I’m in there!

When you’re done here, please carry on to the other film shooters in our blog loop to see how they interpreted framing! Next up: Amy Flipping Berge https://www.amyberge.com/journal-1/2021/1/25/january-framing
